BREAST AUGMENTATION
Breast augmentation is one of the most common aesthetic procedures. The insertion of silicon implants is able to provide women with small or asymmetrical breasts with an improved, more harmonic and balanced appearance.
Every woman’s body is unique, as are her expectations. This is why it is imperative that a pre-operative discussion takes place and there are channels of communication between the patient and the doctor. During her visit to the surgeon, it is important that the patient is shown numerous pre and post-operative photographs of other operated patients, so that she can decide which size would suit her best. This ensures the success of the surgery as well as a natural result.
The silicon implants are extremely safe and there is no risk of rejection by the body, as long as the best quality implants are being chosen in all patients. There are good and bad quality silicone implants. The surgeon has the moral obligation to put in ALL patients the best implants worldwide.
The silicone implants are almost always inserted under the pectoral muscle, because they are covered with another layer of soft tissue and we achieve a more natural result, both visually and palpably. Otherwise, i.e. if the implant is placed over the muscle (directly below the gland), the upper end of the implant is visible under the skin, making the breast look operated.
Placing the silicon beneath the muscle also improves to a minimum the possibility of creating a sclerosing capsule around the implant.
The surgical procedure lasts 1.5-2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The incision is usually made in the sub-mammary crease, where healing is better and the mammary gland is not injured. In that way, the surgery does not affect at all breastfeeding.
Patients can return to work approximately one week after the surgery. Furthermore, they can shower normally after 2 days, since a special bandage is placed over the incision. Absorbable sutures are used, which are not externally visible. Most patients usually do not complain of post-operative pain, while the greater part of the swelling subsides within 2-3 weeks. They are able to start aerobic exercises approximately 21 days after surgery. The incision scars will start to fade away from the first weeks and they will be imperceptible after a few months.
